A great season for
the lads. Having finished 3rd in the Reddish League Division 1, they then
went to Hyde Utd to play the League Champions, Gregorians, in the
Divisional Cup Final. Team selection was a formality for Baz and Ken as
they only had 11 available players in comparison to Gregorians who turned
up like a World Cup squad with dozens of subs and extras.
With only 15
minutes on the clock the writing appeared to be all over the wall with
Gregorians sneaking a 3-0 lead. However, the party was about to be spoiled
when Jack Nuttall scored twice and Carl O'Brien added another to level the
scores at half time.
With Gregorians
rolling subs off and on all Baz and Ken could do was hope the lads could
keep going and they did just that. The final whistle and the score was
still 3-3 meaning 20 minutes of extra time. Gregorians had the squad to
make all the changes wanted. It was a long 20 minutes and the lads had
give it all. With the referee about to blow for full time he awarded a
free kick to Stanley on the edge of the box. Danny Bryce curled in a
fantastic shot and as everyone held their breath, it hit the bar and the
game was over................Penalties !!!
With everyone
exhausted only 2 were really up for it, 3 others were 'persuaded'.
Mike Jones, James
Auty, Jack Nuttall and Adam Ellis stepped forward and gave Stanley a 4-3
penalty victory.
Man of the match
was rightly awarded to Jack Nuttall
